Application of Tuned Mass Damper in Spiral Staircase Design

  • A spiral staircase adopts a basic structural support system formed by 2 floor support beams and 4 suspended hinged suspension rods. The structure has high flexibility and weak stiffness, and resonance reactions occur under single point vertical excitation and second-order crowd load excitation, which cannot meet the high comfort standards required by the owner. Based on the principle of tuned mass damper (TMD) vibration reduction, analyzed and demonstrated the theoretical vibration reduction rate of a spiral staircase with a single TMD under the assumption of a single mass system. Six TMD dampers with a mass of 0.5 t were arranged in reasonable locations on the spiral staircase, and the optimal design parameters of TMD were given to conduct finite element analysis on the comfort of the spiral staircase. The results show that the addition of TMD has a significant vibration reduction effect, and the acceleration response meets the code requirements, which can significantly improve the pedestrian comfort of spiral stairs.
